A breech in the system

* VICTORIAN PREMIER SCREENING *

Maternity Coalition Movie Night, THURSDAY, 5th November, 2009

A BREECH IN THE SYSTEM

A woman wants to give birth to her breech baby in a hospital. They say she has to have a caesarean section. This is an inspiring documentary about her to attempt to birth naturally against all odds.

Karin Ecker's interest in social issues has brought her international credits for her filmmaking plus photographic art. From filming European children exploring environmental issues in the Bahamas to physically handicapped people scuba diving in the Egyptian Sea, she now brings her lens to the issue of childbirth choices in Australia.

She intends to use this film as a tool to support the voice of 'woman'.

The Movie will be followed by a discussion panel including:
Dr Lionel Steinberg - Obstetrician
Joy Johnston - Independent Midwife

There was a big crowd at this event. Well done Jo Askam and your team! Obviously vaginal breech birth is a topic that interests many.

Lionel ("vaginal lionel") Steinberg's response was to outline his 'rules' for breeches - simple rules such as spontaneous onset of labour at term, a good presenting part - complete or frank - and good progress once labour is established, without epidural. Lionel said he will rupture the membranes once labour is established. He commented that the number of women willing to plan vaginal breech birth has been decreasing each year in his practice.

In my comments I stressed the importance for midwives of being ready for the undiagnosed breech, as well as working with women who choose to vaginal birth, knowing that their baby is presenting as a breech.
